Fire-fighting water systems and the long-awaited
DIN 14462:2023-07

Black fire-fighting water storage tank with integrated SPECK pump booster system and control unit for fire protection systems.

What are the changes, and what do operators need to bear in mind now?

DIN 14462:2023-07 is a recently revised standard dealing with the design, installation, operation and maintenance of wall-mounted hydrant systems, as well as systems with above-ground and underground hydrants. This standard was revised by a working group in which our long-standing employee, Dieter Schäfczuk, played an active role, contributing all his experience, knowledge and expertise. The standard was revised to improve the efficiency and safety of fire-fighting water systems and to meet the requirements of modern fire protection technology.

Wall hydrants are important components in the fire protection systems of buildings. In the event of a fire, the hydrant enables both members of the public and the fire service to gain rapid access to a reliable water source for effective firefighting. DIN 14462:2023-07 sets out detailed and important requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of fire-fighting water systems to which wall-mounted hydrants are connected.

There are a number of new elements that the standard redefines. Fortunately, the already high SPECK pump standard required only minor adjustments, meaning that, with the publication of the revised set of standards, we are immediately able to manufacture fire-fighting water systems in accordance with the current specifications.

What sets the new SPECK pump standard for our Feuercell systems apart?

Since July 2023, we have defined our system standard for SPECK fire-fighting water systems as follows:

  • The control system has been simplified.
  • Improved functions relating to drinking water replenishment and drinking water isolation have been added.
  • Tried-and-tested drainage solutions have been retained, in keeping with the motto ‘never change a running system’.
  • The 100% testing on our hygienically monitored test benches remains our standard for the protection of drinking water.
  • For the peace of mind of our designers and contractors, our systems are DEKRA-certified. All pre-storage tank sizes are certified by the DVGW at regular intervals.

At SPECK, safety is a top priority and is embodied in the following fire-fighting water systems:
  • FC I – Fire-fighting water system without a pre-storage tank, for direct connection, for example to non-potable water networks or in combination with downstream filling and emptying stations
  • FC II – Fire-fighting water system including a 700, 1050 or 3000-litre pre-storage tank, for safe separation in accordance with DIN 1988-600
  • FC III – Fire-fighting water system, as per FC II, but including an external water supply to the pre-storage tank. NEW: for buildings taller than 30 m – see DIN 14462:2023-07

The revision of DIN 14462 serves as an important guide and sets out the requirements for safe fire protection. It helps to ensure that fire-fighting water systems function reliably and effectively, which ultimately enhances the safety of buildings and people. Building owners, fire safety experts and fire services can benefit from this high standard by placing their trust in SPECK’s decades of experience and relying on SPECK’s tried-and-tested products for the installation and maintenance of fire-fighting water systems.
