From the storage tank to the treatment plant, through the water circuit and back into the tank: water conveyance links the individual areas of an aquaculture facility. This involves moving the required volumes of water, overcoming differences in height and compensating for pressure losses. Flow rate, water quality and operating mode determine which pump technology is suitable for the task at hand.
SPECK offers a range of centrifugal pumps for this purpose – from controllable plastic pumps to multistage designs for higher pressure requirements. For both fresh and salt water, the hydraulics, materials and seals are carefully matched. This provides planners and plant engineers with a suitable solution for supplying the tanks, feeding the treatment system and transporting water between the individual parts of the plant.

Technical Specifications
The choice of pump depends on the flow rate, head, water quality and the conditions at the installation site.
Pump types for different pumping applications
Depending on the hydraulic requirements and installation conditions, different series may be suitable:
| Series | Design and main application |
|---|---|
| Normblock Multi-S | Standard-suction plastic centrifugal pump for circulation and water transport, for example in larger system circuits. |
| BADU Resort-AK | Self-priming plastic pump with integrated fibre trap and a design optimised for salt water. |
| IN-VB-S / IN-VC-S | Multi-stage vertical centrifugal pumps for clear fluids, for example where higher pressure is required or for flushing applications. |
Selection is based on the specific operating point and compatibility with the fluid.
Determining the flow rate and head
For the design, the required water flow rate and the total head required are determined. This includes differences in elevation as well as pressure losses in pipework, valves and treatment components.
In particular, the following are taken into account:
- Required flow rate under the respective operating conditions
- Water levels on the suction and discharge sides
- Pipe lengths, pipe diameters and fittings
- Pressure losses in the connected treatment system
- Temperature and composition of the fluid being pumped
For the Normblock Multi-S, performance curves, dimensional drawings and material combinations are available in the SPECK Select design programme.
Materials and sealing for fresh and salt water
In the case of saline water, the casing, impeller, mechanical seal and elastomers are considered as a whole. The key factors are the salinity, temperature and other constituents of the pumped medium.
The Normblock Multi-S combines casing and impeller components made from engineering plastics with a mechanical seal made from silicon carbide and EPDM. Its pump shaft does not come into contact with the pumped medium.
The BADU Resort-AK is specifically designed for saline media. In addition to adapted seal materials, it features an intermediate lantern and a labyrinth disc: these separate the sealing area from the motor and keep any escaping fluid and crystallising salts away from the motor and bearings. Special seal materials are available on request.
Drive and demand-based control
The BADU Variostar features integrated speed control and can be controlled externally via digital and analogue inputs. This allows the flow rate to be adjusted to changing requirements within the permissible operating range.
The Normblock Multi-S is fitted with a replaceable IE3 standard motor, including a PTC thermistor. Other motor variants, including permanent magnet motors in efficiency class IE5, are available on request. The motor and, where necessary, the frequency converter are selected to suit the application.
Installation and access for maintenance
Normal-suction and self-priming pumps place different demands on the suction pipework and the position relative to the water level. For the BADU Resort-AK, the pump data sheet specifies a maximum geodetic suction head of three metres. The actual installation options also depend on the conditions of the suction pipework.
The Normblock Multi-S is installed horizontally within the pipework network. Its plug-in shaft system makes it easy to replace the motor. When planning the system, sufficient space must be allowed for maintenance, accessible shut-off valves and the draining of the relevant sections of pipework.
