Powerful massage jets, steady jets of water or exhilarating currents: water attractions transform public swimming pools into places for exercise, relaxation and leisure fun. Behind every water effect lies a pump solution whose flow rate is tailored to the attraction. For operators, energy consumption, durability and ease of maintenance are also key considerations.
SPECK offers pump technology for a variety of attractions and facility sizes – from compact plastic pumps to high-performance Normblock series. Suitable materials and seal designs are available for saltwater and brine pools. We work with you to tailor the pump performance, drive and integration to the desired swimming experience and the conditions of your facility. Specially designed solutions featuring propeller pumps are also available for flow channels.

The block design enables high circulation rates with minimal space requirements. The motor is replaceable without having to completely disassemble the pump or remove the mechanical seal. The highly wear-resistant bellows mechanical seal is independent of the direction of rotation and maintenance-free. It is also medium-lubricated via an internal circulation line, enabling long service life. The pump shaft made of stainless steel 1.4571 is additionally protected by a shaft sleeve, also made of stainless steel 1.4571. This prevents wear on the pump shaft. Directly mounted, low-noise, surface-cooled, replaceable DIN IEC three-phase standard motor. According to energy efficiency class IE3. Includes PTC thermistor.
Technical Specifications
The pump design, flow rate, drive system and materials are tailored to the specific water attraction and its operating conditions
Pumps for various water attractions
Depending on the flow requirements and installation conditions, different series are used:
- BADU 21-80 and BADU 21-81: Standard-suction plastic pumps for whirlpools, counter-current systems and other swimming pool attractions. The BADU 21-81 offers a connection variant to the BADU 21-80.
- Normblock Multi: Single-stage, normal-suction pumps with plastic hydraulic components for larger systems and water attractions.
- Normblock Binero: Single-stage, normal-suction pumps with PE-coated grey cast iron casing components and a bronze impeller.
The selection is based on the required operating point and the water quality.
Flow rate and operating limits
The design takes into account the required air flow rate, the pressure requirements of the attraction, as well as differences in height and pipework losses. Where several attractions are supplied from the same system, their simultaneous operation is also a key consideration.
Performance curves, dimensions and material combinations can be selected and configured using SPECK Select.
For the Binero ‘Normblock’, for example, the product brochure specifies the following operating limits:
| Characteristic | Binero Normblock |
|---|---|
| Maximum water temperature | 75 °C |
| Maximum operating pressure of the pump casing | 10 bar |
| Motor protection rating | IP55 |
The specific design is determined by the relevant data sheet and the selected material combination.
Materials and sealing for salt water and brine
For attractions in saltwater and brine pools, the housing materials and seals are selected to suit the water conditions.
In the BADU 21 AK version, an intermediate lantern and a labyrinth disc separate the seal chamber from the motor. This protects the motor and bearings from water ingress and crystallising salts. The BADU 21-80/32 G-AK uses silicon carbide and Viton as seal materials.
For larger systems, options include the plastic hydraulics of the Normblock Multi and the thermoplastic anti-corrosion coating of the Normblock Binero. The appropriate version depends on the salt concentration, temperature and other aspects of the water composition.
Drive system and demand-based operation
Permanent magnet motors in efficiency class IE5 are among the options available for the Binero ‘Normblock’. Using an external frequency converter tailored to the motor and application, the speed can be adjusted to the required attraction power.
This allows for different operating conditions to be taken into account. The potential savings depend on the actual operating point and the operating times.
Propeller pumps for flow channels
For flow channels designed accordingly, propeller pumps can be an energy-efficient solution. SPECK has demonstrated this concept, amongst other examples, at the Stockstadt Forest Swimming Pool.
This involves considering the pump technology, installation position and channel geometry as a whole. Whether the concept is suitable for a new build or a refurbishment is assessed on the basis of the required flow and the structural conditions.
