The right flow is an essential part of a well-designed aquaculture system. It aids the mixing and distribution of the treated water within the tank. The type of water movement required depends on the species being reared, the shape of the tank and the arrangement of the inlets and outlets. Pump technology and tank design are therefore considered together.
With the BADU Novastar-S and BADU Powerstar-S, SPECK offers propeller pumps for large volumes of water at low delivery heads. Speed-controllable drives allow the system to be adapted to actual requirements. Plastic components and seals designed for use in saline water complement the hydraulic system to provide a solution for a range of requirements in both freshwater and saltwater systems.

Technical Specifications
The flow rate, head and control system are tailored to the desired flow pattern and the hydraulic conditions of your system.
Designing targeted water flow in the pool
The flow pattern results from the interplay between pump capacity, pool shape and water flow. In addition to the flow rate, the distribution of flow velocities is determined in particular by the water depth, the position and orientation of the inlets, and the arrangement of the outlets.
For this reason, the desired flow pattern and the basin geometry are therefore considered together during the design phase. The pump’s flow rate alone does not suffice to describe the flow that occurs at a specific point in the basin.
Propeller pumps for high flow rates
The BADU Novastar-S and BADU Powerstar-S are single-stage, normal-suction propeller pumps with an axial impeller.
| Technical feature | BADU Novastar-S | BADU Powerstar-S |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum flow rate | 100 m³/h | 250 m³/h |
| Power consumption P₁ | 0.09–1.34 kW | 4.60 kW |
| Motor power P₂ | 0.05–1.15 kW | 4.00 kW |
| Supply voltage | 1~ 230 V | 3~ 400 V |
| Integrated speed control | Yes | No |
The actual flow rate is determined by the pump performance curve and the resistance of the connected system. The maximum flow rates stated are not fixed operating points for every installation scenario.
Speed control and system integration
The BADU Novastar-S is fitted with a variable-speed motor and can be controlled externally via digital and analogue inputs. This allows the flow rate to be adapted to different operating conditions and integrated into the plant control system.
The speed range specified in the aquaculture catalogue is 600 to 2,600 min⁻¹. The speed is set within the permissible operating range and in line with the required water flow. For the BADU Powerstar-S, any external speed control that may be required is tailored to the specific project.
Materials and sealing for salt water
In the BADU Novastar-S and BADU Powerstar-S models, the pump casing and impeller are made of glass-fibre-reinforced polypropylene. The S versions feature a mechanical seal with a silicon carbide sliding pair and Viton. The seal is mounted on a plastic hub; the motor or pump shaft does not come into contact with the pumped water.
For a specific application, the plastic material, the sliding pair and the elastomers are considered together. Salinity, temperature and other constituents of the water determine which material and sealing concept is required.
Installation and hydraulic integration
Both propeller pumps are installed in a dry position and can be fitted horizontally or vertically. As normal-suction pumps, they require the pump and suction pipework to be filled before operation.
To ensure efficient operation, pipework, fittings and inlet openings should be designed to minimise pressure losses as far as possible. It is crucial that the available head is suitable for the entire system. This allows the strengths of the propeller hydraulics – high water flow at low head – to be utilised effectively.
