The Habsberg golf course is one of the best in Germany – and a top-quality course requires the right irrigation. The task: following the failure of the old system, to install modern, frequency-controlled pump technology that distributes water with pinpoint accuracy whilst conserving resources. SPECK oversaw the project from the planning stage right through to handover and completed it in just under three months.
Background
The ‘Tuscany of the Upper Palatinate’
Built over 20 years ago in collaboration with star architect Graham Marsh, the Habsberg golf course has been one of the Leading Golf Clubs of Germany for over 15 years. Proper turf management is crucial to maintaining this premium standard – in the face of extreme heat, a lack of rain and, due to climate change, increasingly frequent heavy downpours.
In 2021, the entire old irrigation system failed: excessive switching frequency, a lack of monitoring of operating conditions and outdated control technology. A bespoke solution was required, which SPECK helped to develop right from the planning stage – and implemented in just under three months.
„We chose SPECK pumps because of the high quality of their products. What really won us over was the reliable and professional all-round service – from planning and installation right through to training our greenkeepers and after-sales support.“

Implementation
Precision irrigation across 25 hectares
Across some 25 hectares, 709 sprinklers provide irrigation at night – using an average of 12,000 m³ of water per month in summer, drawn from a well fed by a pond. Each area has its own topography, comprising hills, plains and depressions, which is why the entire system was modelled to allow for a tailored irrigation plan.
Rather than simply being ‘on’ or ‘off’, the system now features dual fairway irrigation and individually controllable sprinklers on the greens. The frequency-controlled pump technology uses water in a resource-efficient manner and sustainably reduces energy consumption – and can be operated via smartphone from anywhere.
Technology and Products
Consistent pressure from low-flow applications right through to full-power irrigation
Three SUPS 6-48-10 submersible pumps and one small SUPS 4-14-17 leakage or jockey pump are in operation in the well shaft. The control range extends from around 4 to approximately 80 m³/h at 8 bar. The jockey pump handles low-volume demands such as cleaning operations or leaks in the 22 km-long pipe network; only when demand increases do the large pumps switch on, and they are subsequently switched off again in stages. This keeps the outlet pressure constant and prevents wear and pressure surges. A GSM module reports faults directly to the greenkeepers via text message.
Result
High-quality pool technology that complements the design

Reaching our goal with the right partners
SPECK oversaw the modernisation of the irrigation system from the planning stage right through to the training of the greenkeepers.
Jura Golf Park
With three courses and a total of 45 holes, the Jura Golf Park is the largest golf complex in Northern Bavaria. In addition to a public 9-hole course and the Hilzhofen championship course, the portfolio also includes the Graham Marsh Design Course at Habsberg – one of Germany’s top courses, opened by Colin Montgomerie in 2002.
